On 17th February, 1915, the 2nd East Surrey battalion of 85 Brigade, 28th Division left their billets in Vlamertinghe and made their way to Ypres where they lined the north bank of the canal covering the Royal Engineers who were digging new trenches after the loss to the enemy of some previous ones. The battalion diary makes no mention of any casualties but it is likely that David Wray was killed, probably from shell fire, while part of this covering party. |
